A Child Shall Lead Them Food Pantry was started in 1992 by Youth from Tazewell Presbyterian, Tazewell Christian and Stras Memorial Episcopal churches. The hours are from 11:00 AM- 3:00 PM Monday – Friday. Those seeking assistance must bring proof of income and if guidelines are met can receive assistance of food once a month. The Food Pantry is supported by TPC and many area churches, organizations and individuals supplying funds and food.
Angel Tree is a unique ministry of Prison Fellowship. It works by connecting parents in prison with their children through the purchasing of gifts and delivering by the church. It is a blessing to the prisoner, who’s able to fill the pride of providing something to his or her child, the children who experience the joy of knowing they have not been forgotten, and the church volunteers, who reap the rewards of sharing the love of God.
Blanket Sunday, held in March, is a presbytery endorsed offering given to Church World Service to provide summer and winter- weight blankets for the cost of $5/blanket to needy families in 80 countries including the U.S. (www.churchworldservice.org)
Camp Joy is an ongoing local mission project of the youth and adults of Tazewell Presbyterian Church by the adoption and refurbishing of a cabin for use by children in the summer enjoying a first- time camp experience. Camp Joy is now owned and operated by Clinch Valley Community Action serving needy children in Tazewell, Mercer and McDowell Counties (www.clinchvalleycaa.org)
Christmas Joy Gift is an offering designated by the General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church to be received during Advent for the support of retired pastors/church-workers and their families as well as for Presbyterian racial ethnic education. (www.pcusa.org)
Mount Rogers School, geographically isolated by mountainous roads and rugged terrain, is one of two schools in the state of Virginia that has grades Pre-K -12. It is also the only school with an old time string band. Tazewell Presbyterian Church has taken Christmas presents (along with Santa) to 90+ students and joined in the Christmas Party at the school for many years. The school will close as soon as the new regional school is complete.
One Great Hour of Sharing is an offering designated by the General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church to be received at Easter for the international ministries for disaster response, refugee assistance and community development with 36% going to the Presbyterian Hunger Program, 32% to self development of people, and 32% to Presbyterian Disaster Assistance.
Presbyterian Women Birthday Offering is a church-wide offering taken at a special worship service given entirely by the women of the church, followed by a luncheon with cake and ice cream. The funds collected go to the special projects chosen by the Creative Ministries Offering Committee of Presbyterian Women.
Samaritan’s Purse and their Operation Christmas Child bring joy, hope, and the Good News of God’s love to children around the world. Tazewell Presbyterian Church/Black’s Chapel collects gift-filled shoeboxes in November for boys and girls of varying ages and ships them to a central point for distribution.
Trust fund interest from designated funds given to the Church is used for benevolent projects locally, nationally and internationally as determined by the Fellowship and Missions Committee.
