DAILY GRACE

September 21, 2020, Monday of the 25th Week of Ordinary Time

Scripture: Luke 8:16-18

‘No one after lighting a lamp hides it under a jar, or puts it under a bed, but puts it on a lampstand, so that those who enter may see the light. For nothing is hidden that will not be disclosed, nor is anything secret that will not become known and come to light. Then pay attention to how you listen; for to those who have, more will be given; and from those who do not have, even what they seem to have will be taken away.’

The Word of the Lord. Thanks be to God.

Meditation:

‘. . . puts it on a lampstand, so that those who enter may see the light

Imagine a dark room centuries ago in ancient Palestine being flooded with light when someone lights a lamp. The light reaches to the corners of the room, illuminates faces and surfaces, and transforms a dark place into a warmly lit home. In this parable and those preceding it, Jesus is speaking of his word, which is a gift for us to embrace. The word has power to enlighten and make us vessels of that indescribable light. Jesus has gifted his word with the power and qualities of light: power that makes light streak across the universe at unbelievable speed, qualities that unfold in the spectacle of the northern lights and shimmer in the most delicate rainbow.

The Lord wants us to spread his word, to be the light, to join him in the revelation that can make all things visible and bring all secrets to light. Think of the look of illumination on Helen Keller’s face when, helped by Anne Sullivan, her teacher, she understood the concept of water. We should want to help others experience the wonder and happiness of faith in that way, by conveying the Lord’s word.

Prayer

Lord Jesus Christ, Light of the World, help me to remember that, no matter how dark all might seem around me, your light dwells within, and I, like you, can share it through love.

Contemplation

Lord, be my light!
